The honest answer surprises most people: they solve different problems. Asking which one you need is a bit like asking whether you need a kettle or a fridge. Sometimes you need both, sometimes just one, and the answer depends on what you're actually trying to fix.

What a Whole-House Filter Actually Does

A whole-house filter sits on your main water line, before the water splits off to your taps, showers, geyser, washing machine, and dishwasher. Everything that flows into your house gets filtered first.

What it removes:

  • Bad taste and odour
  • Some larger contaminants

What it doesn't do (in most configurations):

  • Remove dissolved minerals (calcium, magnesium)

What Reverse Osmosis Actually Does

A reverse osmosis system sits under one sink (almost always the kitchen) and feeds one dedicated tap. Only the water you drink and cook with goes through it.

What it removes:

  • Heavy metals (lead, arsenic, copper, mercury)
  • Microplastics and most nanoplastics
  • PFAS and other dissolved organic contaminants
  • Chlorine, fluoride, nitrates

What it doesn't do:

  • Filter the rest of your house's water
  • Protect appliances or fittings
  • Help your shower, washing machine, or geyser

Choose a whole-house filter if:

Choose a reverse osmosis system if:

In our experience, most homeowners who start with one eventually add the other. There's no wrong order — but the combination is what gives you complete coverage.


A Note on Borehole and Rainwater

Our standard whole-house systems are designed for municipal supply. They're not suitable for borehole water.

For borehole water: we need a SANS 241 water test of your supply first. Iron, manganese, nitrates, hardness, and bacteria all vary dramatically from one property to the next. Once you have your test results, send them through to us and we'll spec the right combination — usually sediment filtration, UV sterilisation, and RO tailored to your water.

For rainwater (harvested into a tank): a whole-house system paired with a UV steriliser is the proven combo. The whole-house unit removes sediment and roof debris; the UV kills bacteria and parasites. For drinking and cooking, add an RO system at the kitchen tap.


What It Actually Costs

The honest framing most filter companies skip:

A four-person SA household spending around R1,200 a month on bottled water is paying roughly R14,400 a year. Forever.

  • A complete under-counter RO system pays itself off in about six weeks against that
  • A whole-house system is a bigger investment, but pays back over time across your geyser, washing machine, skin, and appliances
  • The combination still beats bottled water within the first year

After payback, you're paying for replacement cartridges only — typically a few hundred rand a year — and getting cleaner water than most bottled brands sell.


The Bottom Line
