These tablets are not a water filter media themselves, but a key consumable for softener regeneration. As hard water passes through a softener's ion-exchange resin, calcium and magnesium ions are captured and replaced with sodium ions, producing soft water. Over time the resin becomes saturated; brine made from these salt tablets is then used to flush the resin clean and recharge it with fresh sodium ions, restoring its softening capacity for the next cycle.

Tablets are added to the brine tank, where they dissolve into a concentrated salt solution as water is introduced. During the softener's regeneration cycle, this brine is drawn through the resin bed, displacing the hardness minerals the resin has collected and carrying them to drain. The resin is then rinsed clean, and the brine tank refills with water ready to dissolve the next batch of tablets.

1. Open the lid of your water softener's brine tank.

2. Add salt tablets so the tank stays roughly half to two-thirds full — avoid letting it run completely empty.

3. Check salt levels every few weeks, topping up as needed depending on household water usage and hardness.

4. Break up any clumping or salt bridging in the tank if it occurs.

5. Store unused bags in a cool, dry area away from moisture to keep tablets free-flowing.
